THE MATTER OF METHODS IN DESIGN RESEARCH
We wish to invite academic staff and students across all institutes and research centres at AHO to a research seminar about ways of thinking about and framing research methods. In design-related disciplines students and researchers use a wide variety of visual techniques and methods (drawing, sketching, model making, photography, video making, mapping etc.) to think, create, and communicate. However, a major challenge they face is how to reflect on, analyse, and give accounts of the means by which these practices contribute to knowledge making, on an epistemological and ontological level.
This seminar will address a number of questions about relationships between design and research such as: what challenges do researchers that engage in design based inquiry face with regards to reflecting on and giving methodological accounts of research? What innovations can design tools and techniques propose for research methodology?
Invited guests for this event include:
Jessica Hemmings - National College of Art and Design, Dublin
Annette Markham - Aarhus University, Dept. of Digital Design and Information Studies
Nerea Calvillo - University of Warwick, Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies
In addition to the guests, there will be a couple of presenters from the Centre for Design Research at AHO. Each presenter will speak for 15 minutes; there will then be 5 minute response/reflection/ discussion from an assigned opponent, then 10 minutes open discussion.
Registration deadline: interested participants should send an email to henry.mainsah@aho.no by October 14.
