Textiles were not exempt from the vast networks of colonial trade, but they remain curiously peripheral to postcolonial discourse. The same cannot be said of a number of artists who deploy textile practices influenced by, but also contributing to, postcolonial, and more recently decolonial, thinking. For some artists, postcolonial themes are apparent in the choice of visual content depicted; others enact decolonial critique through their decisions about the labour of contemporary textile production.
