The career of Austrian artist Franz West (1947–2012) prefigured the social and collaborative trends now dominating visual and material culture. Born in the aftermath of World War II, his childhood was spent in bomb-damaged Vienna. At the age of 30, West eventually enrolled as a student at the Academy of Applied Arts (1977–1982). Until his death at the age of 65, he consistently challenged the norms of gallery conventions by inviting interaction and using his artwork to encourage meeting points...
